Company insolvencies see 12-month decline
10 August 2010![]()
There has been a reduction in the number of company insolvencies in England and Wales over the past 12 months, latest figures from the Insolvency Service show. The statistics from the second quarter of this year are 19.1 per cent lower than during the same period in 2009.
A total of 1,169 compulsory liquidations and 2,911 creditors voluntary liquidations were ordered in the second quarter. This reflects a slight rise of 0.5 per cent in the total number of insolvencies when compared to the first three months of 2010.
Steven Law, President of insolvency body R3, commented: "The early stages of recovery are typically a challenging time for businesses as creditors begin to be more aggressive in their debt collection, but, from what I am seeing, creditors are being more lenient than in previous recessions." He added that a more accurate picture of the current insolvency rate is likely to emerge towards the end of the year, when new data is released.
