Treasury mulls new corporate governance watchdog
29 July 2010![]()
The Treasury has proposed merging the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) with the UK Listings Authority to create a new watchdog for corporate governance. Under the plans, the UK Listings Authority would be separated from the Financial Services Authority and merged with the FRC to be supervised by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
A statement from the Treasury said that "within the proposed new regulatory architecture, there is a strong case for a powerful companies regulator" which would have responsibility for regulating corporate governance, corporate information and its disclosure, and the stewardship of companies by institutional shareholders.
The proposal is part of a consultation document released by the Treasury recently detailing the Government's plan to review the financial regulation system. The new body, if it goes ahead, would have responsibility for offences such as insider trading and accounting fraud. "Today is a crucial milestone in our programme of reform," said Financial Secretary to the Treasury Mark Hoban.
