It is important for people to think about completing a Power of Attorney should they ever reach the stage where they can no longer look after their own finances through mental or physical incapacity.
Consumer expert Dom Littlewood emphasised on BBC's the One Show that it is important for people to consider who they will leave their estates to when they die. He indicated this would help them later in their lifetime if they were no longer able to deal with their property and bank accounts themselves. He pointed out that those who fail to put these measures into place will find they have to apply through the Court of Protection to gain control of the financial affairs of their loved ones.
This can be both a costly and lengthy experience, Mr Littlewood stressed, so making provisions before the situation arises is highly important.
Camilla James, elder law expert commented "Through continuing media exposure, there is the realisation that while a Will is a good starting point when thinking of how to protect your family in the future, powers of attorney are also important and will ensure that the family or friends that you have chosen will be able to deal with your finances if you were deemed to be incapable of dealing with them yourself."
