Civil servants see redundancy pay capped
14 July 2010![]()
Civil servants will see their redundancy payments capped as part of the cuts to government spending. Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude emphasised that legislation had been passed that would limit all compulsory redundancy deals to 12 months of pay. Those who voluntarily choose to be made redundant, on the other hand, will receive 15 months of their salaries.
He assured civil servants that the move had been made with a great deal of reluctance, especially after previous attempts to introduce the changes were blocked by the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.
PCS leader Mark Serwotka revealed that action will be taken if the legislation is found not to be in the best interests of union members. He stressed: "If ministers are determined to make low-paid public servants pay for a crisis caused by bankers and traders, we will use all the means at our disposal to fight."
