Equality Act comes into force in October
20 July 2010![]()
The initial stages of implementation of the Equality Act will come into force as of October, the Government Equalities Office has announced. This will give businesses ample time to consider how the changes will affect them and put provisions in place to ensure they comply.
Among the areas covered by the Equality Act are the protection of disabled people against workplace discrimination and tackling of the gender pay gap. It aims to bring together nine existing pieces of legislation into one, single law to reduce the burden on the country's businesses.
Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities Theresa May noted that because the laws are more easily understandable, they can be put into force more effectively. "By making the law easier to understand, the Equality Act will help business treat staff fairly and meet the needs of a diverse customer base," she added.
