Employers need to give fathers the opportunity to work flexibly to give them a more evenly distributed work/life balance, suggested Jon Davies, Chief Executive at Families Need Fathers. He revealed that mothers are often given such opportunities, but the same cannot be said for fathers.
"[Employers] will have a happier employee and therefore the employer won't have as many problems with them," Mr Davies advised. His comments follow research conducted by the Fatherhood Institute, which showed that three-quarters of fathers would like to share roles with their partners, rather than only one parent acting as main carer.
Flexible working patterns can be requested by any employee, although some will have a better case than others. In most cases, the applicant must have worked for an employer for 26 weeks or more and must have, or expect to have, parental responsibility for a child aged 16 or under.
