Firms urged to ensure compliance with equal pay laws
06 September 2010![]()
Calls have been made by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the British Chambers of Commerce for firms across the country to ensure they are compliant with equal pay laws. Both groups are seeking to improve transparency around pay issues in the workplace after statistics revealed some disparity is still apparent.
Data shows that even 40 years after the Equal Pay Act was brought into legislation, women who are employed full-time earn 16.4 per cent less than their male counterparts. In the public sector this gap stands at 14.6 per cent, compared to 21.6 per cent in the private sector.
Dr Jean Irvine, Commissioner at the EHRC, said: "While transparency is not enough in itself to reduce the pay gap between men and women, it does provide clarity; it is difficult, if not impossible, to resolve a problem that cannot be seen." She also emphasised that employees are generally more comfortable working for an organisation where pay equality is at the fore.
