Industrial backlash 'may arise' from employment disputes
18 June 2009![]()
Some companies may find themselves bearing the brunt of an industrial backlash should they ask their staff to work for nothing, warned Carolyn Jones, Director at the Institute of Employment Rights. In recent days, British Airways asked its workforce to sign up for unpaid work or leave to help the company out of its economic woes.
However, Ms Jones believes this could give rise to a risky situation. "I think there will be an industrial backlash as we've seen in recent disputes, if employers continue to try and make the workers pay for a crisis they didn't create," she continued.
One option would be to make bosses pay through their "massive salaries and their bonuses", Ms Jones suggested, or even through the cashing in of shares. It seems unfair for those who benefit during times of economic boom not to have to play a part when times are not as good, she added.
