More red tape leads to business burdens
25 May 2010![]()
Red tape is creating large-scale problems for many of the country's businesses, as they find it increasingly difficult to understand employment law. This is according to new figures from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which highlighted that there has been more than an £11 billion rise in costs associated with red tape over the past year alone.
Among the new pieces of legislation to have caused confusion are the introduction of the Community Infrastructure Levy and Euro 5 and 6 Light Duty Vehicle Emissions Standards, it stressed. In total, the BCC claimed that 40 new laws have been introduced over the past year and affect businesses in different ways.
David Frost, Director-General of the BCC, said: "There needs to be an urgent and sweeping review of all regulations that incur costs for business and importantly, a moratorium on new employment laws until at least 2014."
Patricia Morrill, legal executive in the employment law team, comments: "As well as the inconvenience of excessive legislation, the biggest worry for both smaller and larger companies is the 'fear of what you can and can't do'. If companies get a decision wrong, a subsequent claim by a disgruntled employee can be both costly and time consuming."
