'Sick' council worker found guilty of fraud
02 September 2010![]()
A London council worker has been found guilty of fraud after he taking part in athletics events while on sick leave. Matthew Thomas claimed he had injured his back after falling from a ladder, leading him to take time off work between November 2007 and June 2008.
The 34-year-old received £13,892.12 in statutory sick pay from his job as payroll officer at Newham Council until he resigned from his post. Among the events Mr Thomas was found to have taken part in were the Surrey County Indoor Championships and the Birmingham Athletic Games.
Rebecca Channon, who was prosecuting in the case, said Mr Thomas completed a 90-minute coaching session just one day after informing his employers of his injuries. "This case is about fraud and dishonesty. Plainly he was carrying on quite an active life outside his employment at the London Borough of Newham whilst being off sick," she added.
