Tube drivers stage walk-out over 'unfair dismissal'
22 July 2010![]()
Some 77 London Underground workers have taken 24-hour strike action over what they claim is the unfair dismissal of a tube train driver. The action was taken yesterday (21 July) by members of train drivers' union ASLEF and relates to the dismissal of a driver at Rickmansworth, after a female passenger injured her leg after being trapped in a door.
According to ASLEF, which voted 90 per cent in favour of the action, the driver had a "33-year unblemished record". Acting General Secretary Simon Weller said: "The problem was caused by safety deficiencies, especially concerning mirrors, which we had reported regularly to management."
London Underground said it was "disappointed" with the decision to ballot for strike action, saying the driver has been "temporarily re-graded" as a result of his "failure to follow safety procedures". During the course of the strike action, the organisation will operate a special timetable to reduce the impact on passengers.
