Waste battery legislation to come into force
29 December 2009![]()
New laws are soon to come into force to encourage the proper disposal and recycling of industrial and automotive batteries. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills advises that the changes will be implemented on 1 January 2010 and will require the companies to arrange the collection, treatment and recycling of batteries where requested.
Ian Lucas, Minister for Business and Regulatory Reform, commented: "These regulations are designed to complement the excellent recycling rates traditionally achieved for industrial and automotive batteries." He emphasised that the costs associated with recycling scrap batteries would now lie with producers, rather than business users.
The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 legislation has been brought into force to complement the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008, which are already active. The new laws will place a ban on the landfill disposal or incineration of waste industrial and automotive batteries.
