A new web-based marketplace designed to help turn great business ideas into reality has been launched with the support of Gerrards Cross legal firm B P Collins and TV personality Johnny Ball.

microFunding is the brainchild of Chris Clegg who told the audience of inventors, investors and business leaders at the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents that it provided a wholly new way to help fund great business ideas by increasing inventors’ chances of finding money and turning projects into serious business successes.

“It’s a sad fact for the UK economy that too many brilliant ideas never see the light of day because the inventor doesn't have the time or business skills to raise funds successfully, and turn his idea to profit,” said Clegg, who heads up the new venture as managing director.

“Worse still, inventors daren't even talk with the people who might be able to help them for fear of losing their rights to their idea. microFunding is a ground-breaking approach that solves these problems.”

B P Collins is one of six Thames Valley organisations providing their expertise to the project and David Stanning, corporate and commercial partner at the firm has been closely involved.

“The microFunding launch elicited tremendous enthusiasm and interest from a receptive audience of inventors, investors and advisers,” he said. “It all made for an oasis of optimism in an otherwise gloomy business landscape. We all look forward with high expectations to a very successful future for the microFunding concept.”

Also lending his support was Johnny Ball, TV personality and champion of British inventors, who added: “I feel really sad about some of the great UK inventions of the past that were exploited by other countries who were more prepared to see their commercial benefit.

“Historically UK investors have been too risk averse to gamble on inventors unless they also happened to have great commercial acumen. It’s wonderful that there is now a mechanism to link inventors and experienced commercial managers, reducing the risk for investors and ensuring more great ideas get to market in their country of origin.”

The B P Collins team will be focusing on helping entrepreneurs ensure all the necessary legal paperwork is in order to help get their ideas off the ground, including advising on heads of agreement between founding partners, investment agreements between inventors and investors, and ownership of intellectual property rights.

The microFunding project is now in the first stages of commercialisation and is slowly introducing itself as the new way to fund exciting business ideas, making it attractive for inventors, managers and investors alike.
