Britons admit to travelling with drink drivers
19 June 2009![]()
One-third of Britons have admitted to getting into a car with someone they believe is over the legal alcohol consumption limit, a poll by Direct Line has found. Of those questioned, 34 per cent said they had knowingly done this, while over one in three admitted to acting as a look-out as someone over the limit drove the vehicle.
"If you know someone who plans to drink and drive, stop them, persuade them not to drive, even take their keys off them, but before volunteering to drive their car make sure you are insured, because if you're not you will find yourself breaking the law," warned Head of Direct Line Car Insurance Maggie Game. Ten per cent of the people polled said they had offered to drive the car themselves in such situations, while 12 per cent took the keys off the person and suggested they find an alternative way of getting home.
Furthermore, the findings suggested that passengers' attitudes change with age, as the most willing age group to act as a look-out for other vehicles, the police and speed cameras is 18 to 34-year-olds.
