Many of the country's motorists are unaware of basic road laws and engage in distracting tasks behind the wheel, a study from AutoTrader.co.uk has found. It discovered that 72 per cent of motorists text and talk behind the wheel, while 85 per cent listen to excessively loud music.
"Ignoring the government's ban on the use of mobile phones whilst driving shows that the safety messages behind this legislation are still not filtering through to the motorist," said Matt Thompson, Marketing Director of AutoTrader.co.uk. He added that, despite being in place for years, the law is still being flouted by over 40 per cent of the country's motorists.
The government made it illegal on 27 February 2007 to use a handheld mobile phone while driving, increasing the number of penalty points given to three and imposing a fine of £60. AutoTrader.co.uk warns that disobeying the law could lead to people losing more than just their licence in the long-term.
