Tribunal payouts 'on the increase'

The amount of money paid out at tribunals is at a record high, according to new statistics.

Figures obtained by the Sunday Telegraph show that the amount awarded through tribunals rose to over £32 million last year, marking a £7 million increase on the previous year's results.

Speaking to the publication, a spokesman for the Confederation of British Industry says: "Too often, employers feel pressured to settle out of court because of the costs involved, even when advised they would win."

The figures also reveal that payouts for disability, sex and race have remained steady throughout the past few years.

According to the paper, statistics suggest that awards for unfair dismissal have increased from £19.8 million in 2004/05 to £26.6 million in 2006/07.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that plans to simplify workplace dispute resolutions were being passed through parliament.

The measures would see "more informal resolution" of such disputes, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform stated.
