Changes proposed to drink, drug driving laws
17 June 2010![]()
Drink and drug driving laws need to be altered in order to save more lives, it has been recommended. The Review of Drink and Drug Driving Law suggested that the current drink driving limit should be reduced from 80mg per 100ml to 50mg per 100ml, which has the potential to make a real difference on the country's roads. Meanwhile, legal scholar Sir Peter North indicated that a step-by-step approach should be taken towards driving under the influence of drugs.
Sir Peter also did not dismiss the idea of establishing a new law that sets out banned drug levels. He commented: "Any new offence should focus on establishing levels of drugs in the blood at which significant impairment - and therefore, risk to public safety - can be reasonably assumed, as is the case now for drink driving."
The report highlighted that many people do not know the current limit when it comes to drink driving, so more needs to be done to educate drivers on what they are legally allowed to do.
