Defamation cases on the rise
03 September 2010![]()
The number of defamation cases heard in UK courts has increased over the course of the past year, the latest figures from legal publishers Sweet & Maxwell show. Between 2008/09 and 2009/10, there was a six per cent rise in such cases, with celebrities being involved in many of them.
High-profile defamation proceedings increased from 11 to 30, with the likes of David Beckham and Kate Beckinsale among those to have had their cases heard in court. Analysis from the publisher suggests the rise may be down to agents working more closely alongside law firms when claims are made in the media.
The figures also reveal that so-called libel tourism is not as big a problem as expected in the UK, with just three out of the 83 cases heard over the past 12 months falling under this category. Among them was Roman Abramovich's case against Italian publisher Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso.
