Mediation grows in popularity, study shows

An increasing number of people are turning to mediation in order to sort out their legal troubles, the latest research from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) has revealed. Seen by the Law Gazette, the report identifies that there are currently around 6,000 cases settled each year through mediation, twice the amount seen in 2007.
In mainstream commercial cases, the number of mediations has risen by 30 per cent over the course of the past three years, with the mediators themselves witnessing good success rates. The survey found that 75 per cent of cases are settled on the same day, while 14 per cent draw to a close not long afterwards.
Graham Massie, Director of Consultancy at CEDR, commented: "Significant progress has been made in recent years since our last audit. The commercial market is still growing steadily and there are encouraging signs of new areas of application."
Nick Hallchurch, mediation specialist at B P Collins, comments: "We have seen many cases settled by mediation over the last 5 years and the trend is upwards. Settlement at mediation usually results in significant savings of costs to the parties."
