Heavyweight praise for B P Collins

B P Collins LLP is celebrating a double success after being named as a “regional heavyweight” for the first time in the 27th annual Legal 500 league tables and achieving top tier status in an unprecedented five practice areas.

The ranking underlines its growing stature as a regional law firm, recognised as one of only 25 law firms named across the South East, and the depth of expertise and skills across both the firm’s corporate and commercial and private client teams.

Of particular significance is the success of the Business Immigration team, led by James Townsend and Kathryn Fielder, which went straight into the top tier in its first year of operation and saw both lawyers singled out for individual praise as leaders in their field.

Also retaining their top tier status for 2014 were the Dispute Resolution and Commercial Litigation team – which was described as “first-rate” and the Family team, praised for its “exceptional level of service”.

Sitting alongside them at the top table are the Employment practice, described as “commercially savvy” and the Personal Tax, Trusts and Probate group which, said the report authors, “epitomises the qualities of a good and knowledgeable practice”.

Senior Partner Chris Hardy said: “This is a fantastic result for B P Collins and demonstrates the extremely high levels of knowledge and expertise our lawyers provide to clients throughout the Thames Valley and beyond.

“Particular congratulations must go to the Business Immigration team, to achieve such high reward within the first 12 months of operation is outstanding and showcases our ability to develop new opportunities in an ever-changing legal playing field.

“In addition, I am very proud of our prowess across the whole spectrum of services, which has been recognised with the accolade of ‘regional heavyweight’. We are very proud of our track record in supporting both business and private clients across the region and this acknowledges our achievements. As we look forward to next year we are determined to add still further to our expertise and reinforce our reputation still further.”

Top level expertise

Within the top-ranked Dispute Resolution and Commercial Litigation team, practice head Matthew Brandis was praised for having an “outstanding understanding of his clients’ businesses”, while Craig Williams’ client service skills are “second to none”. Overall the team was noted for its “ability to deliver clear advice and implement commercially astute strategies”. It has acted in numerous multi-million pound cases in 2013.

B P Collins’ Employment team was described as having “the ability to take on successfully the more complex cases”. Partners Jo Davis and James Townsend both received plaudits, Jo for her work on advising Biffa Waste Services on employment issues connected with the purchase of another business; while James was described as “a rising talent – a robust negotiator and commercially astute” and “a fantastic tactician”.

James received further praise for his business immigration skills, with the league table authors saying he was appreciated for his “niche experience in employment/immigration crossover cases”, while senior associate Kathryn Fielder was “knowledgeable and enjoyable to work with”.

Partner Sue Andrews, who leads the top-ranked Family practice, was singled out for her “acute commercial awareness” and the ability to “cut through vast amounts of data to focus on the key issues”.

The Personal Tax, Trusts and Probate practice, also tier one, saw team head Paul Lowery praised for his “ability to listen and then lay out clearly the available options”.

Retaining its tier two ranking is the Corporate and Commercial team, with Alex Zachary being singled out for his work on advising Biffa Waste Services, while Simon Deans was described as “technically very strong” and able to “resolve difficult situations in a practical way”.

Also in tier two is the Environment team, led by Diane Yarrow, who received individual praise for her expertise, with the guide saying she is “very knowledgeable and easy to work with”. The team overall was described as having a “comprehensive” practice, including waste, renewables and recycling matters.

Within the Contentious Trusts and Probate team, which achieved a tier three ranking, Craig Williams and Matthew Brandis were described as “strong lawyers who benefit from an excellent litigation team behind them”.

Michael Larcombe, partner and leader of the tier three Commercial Property team, which gained City & Provincial Properties plc as a new client last year, was described as “completely unflappable”.

Also retaining its tier three status was the Property Litigation and Charities and not-for-profit team.
