Energy efficiency ratings to be made compulsory
17 August 2010![]()
It will soon be mandatory for house sellers to display the energy efficiency rating of their property when putting it on the market, it has been revealed. The European Union (EU) Directive will come into force as of 2012 and will be applicable for all homes sold in the UK.
At present, energy performance certificates are used to encourage homeowners to improve the efficiency of their properties, but this information may not be readily available to buyers on their first viewing. The EU legislation aims to make the buying and selling process much more transparent to both parties, while also encouraging homeowners to improve their energy efficiency.
Phil Levermore, Managing Director of not-for-profit energy company Ebico, commented: "The link between the value of a home and its energy efficiency rating is about to get much clearer. There has never been a better time to make a home more energy efficient."
