Green standard for new homes to be revised
17 December 2009![]()
A standard which was put in place to help with the construction of eco-friendly homes is to be made more consumer-friendly, Communities and Local Government has announced. The mandatory building regulations are applicable to both builders and homeowners wanting to keep track of how sustainable their properties are.
At present, the code is ranked from one to six, with the lowest end of the scale representing a level at which builders meet the regulations. A grade six, however, is given to buildings which reflect exemplary sustainable properties.
"Our homes account for a quarter of UK carbon emissions, so it's clear they are a vital part of our efforts to tackle climate change," revealed Housing and Planning Minister John Healey. The renewed code will strive to remove bureaucratic hurdles wherever possible and it will consider tougher new energy-efficiency regulations.
