National landlords' register to be scrapped
11 June 2010![]()
The national landlords' register will not be implemented by the coalition government, Housing Minister Grant Shapps has announced. He noted that the plans would create further bureaucratic burdens for the private-rented sector, so it will be scrapped alongside home information packs.
This move has been met with praise by the National Landlords' Association (NLA), which pointed out that the proposals were "flawed" from the outset. "We are very pleased that the government is rejecting previous attempts to introduce a register: it was the wrong way to go about raising standards in the private-rented sector and would not have rooted out rogue landlords," said NLA Chairman David Salusbury.
He believes that the system would have penalised law-abiding landlords, while still giving rogue operators the chance to slip through the net. Many tenants are content with the service they receive, it is just the small minority who have fallen victim to unscrupulous individuals, the NLA added.
