New planning laws 'could stifle recovery'
03 June 2010![]()
The coalition government's plans to make property planning laws tighter in the UK could hinder recovery efforts in the sector, the Financial Times has revealed. Plans are afoot to shift power to local authorities, which housing experts believe could contribute to the growing shortage of property throughout the country.
It was recently revealed by Communities and Local Government that there were 13 per cent more property projects started in the first three months of 2010 when compared to the previous quarter.
Andrew Wiseman, Chief Executive of Telford Homes, said the government was "brave" for deciding to hand over its reins, although problems are nevertheless likely to ensue. "[The government] is living in cloud cuckoo land to think that local people-power will improve the already tough planning permission laws in this country," he told the paper.
Would-be entrants to the property market could also be deterred by the new legislation, as they may lack the relationships needed with local authorities to sign development deals, the paper claimed.
