Data sharing powers 'granted to government'
26 November 2008![]()
The government was granted greater powers to share data yesterday, as new legislation was announced.
A report by the Ministry of Justice asserts that the exchange of data must be done so in the interests of the public.
It states: "The sharing of personal data between government departments in a secure and appropriate manner is essential to protect the public and to deliver public services."
Among the benefits of data sharing is the protection of vulnerable groups such as children, the report continues, allowing for a greater provision of both health and education.
The government says it will work closely with the Information Commissioner's Office to implement the plans and ensure they will benefit the public and private sectors.
Jack Straw responded to the changes in legislation, saying that they would "enforce" the Data Protection Act and make organisations accountable for their dealings with personal information.
Transparency will also be increased, he added.
