EU-wide patent a step closer?

A new package of measures has been agreed upon in Brussels, which may make it easier for people looking to secure their intellectual property in Europe. Ministers met at the Competitiveness Council and decided a single patent was needed for those rolling out an invention on the continent.
"If Europe is serious about our knowledge economy being key to economic recovery, then patent reform is the essential underpinning," commented UK Minister for Higher Education and Intellectual Property David Lammy. He said that the changes would make it easier for people to innovate and protect their intellectual property and will give companies greater flexibility.
Predictions suggest the EU-wide patenting system will help reduce costs for businesses, potentially saving them €150 million (£135 million) a year. It will also present a means of time saving for companies, the Intellectual Property Office proposed, which may help countries towards an economic recovery.
