Google reclaims rights to email address
05 May 2010![]()
Users of Gmail, the email service from Google, will soon be able to benefit from much shorter addresses after the internet giant won a legal dispute over intellectual property rights. Those who signed up for an account after 19 October 2005 have been presented with @googlemail.com addresses, as opposed to others who used @gmail.com.
Independent International Investment Research had been using the term Gmail two years before the internet company laid claim to it, leading to a legal battle over rights to the name. Although the finer details of the eventual deal have not been disclosed, Google was keen to let its users know that the matter has now been resolved.
"After engaging in legal proceedings at the trademark office, we were able to reach a settlement with the party with whom we had the conflict," a Spokesperson for Google said. Similar battles have also been fought by the internet giant in Germany, Russia and Poland.
