New powers granted to Information Commissioner's Office
14 January 2010![]()
In a bid to reduce the number of breaches on personal data, new powers have been given to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Serious violations of the Data Protection Act can now be penalised with a £500,000 fine, although the body has insisted it will review each case on an individual basis.
Christopher Graham, Information Commissioner, said: "Getting data protection right has never been more important than it is today … When things go wrong, a security breach can cause real harm and great distress to thousands of people." He added that all bodies will be encouraged to conform to the Data Protection Act, including those in the voluntary, public and private sectors.
Mr Graham warned that the ICO would not hesitate to impose sanctions on companies found to be in serious breach of the law. The new regulations will come into force on 6 April and the ICO has issued guidance on how it proposes to use its new powers.
