A court battle is underway between the BBC and publisher HarperCollins over allegations of a breach of contract. The news corporation claims that by publishing a book revealing the identity of Top Gear's The Stig, HarperCollins is breaking a confidentiality agreement.
The dispute has been instigated in the High Court, but will not be heard in full until next week. "This situation has come about as a result of an attempt by an external party to profit from unauthorised use of the Top Gear brand," a BBC Spokesperson explained. They added that the corporation will do all it can to "uphold confidentiality clauses" in relation to the ever-popular show.
HarperCollins has confirmed that it will "vigorously defend" its right to go ahead with the book. The contractual dispute has come to light after several national newspapers used details in financial documents to speculate that Formula 3 racing driver Ben Collins is the man under The Stig's helmet.
Last year, Top Gear unmasked the figure as Michael Schumacher, but many fans were left unconvinced.
