Technology and IP - The year that was...
20 January 2009![]()
Simon Deans, partner in the technology & IP team shares his comments on the experience of the technology market for law firms in 2008.
It was generally buoyant on the 'pure' technology side (exploitation of IP rights and technology), but saw a steady decline in transaction support work as the credit crunch put paid to many corporate deals.
One knock on impact of the recession is that many large companies are taking decision-making higher up the chain of command, meaning commercial contracts negotiations are taking longer to close.
We expect the next 12-24 months to be difficult for those developing new IP, particularly smaller companies and inventors, as the funding available to take their concepts to market is more difficult to find and, when found, more expensive.
Accordingly, the team has been involved in the legal aspects behind microFunding; a company set up solely to help create profitable businesses for inventors and managers, and help give investors better returns from early stage opportunities. It gives inventors an early stage platform to prove their concepts and obtain investor and professional support for taking their IP forwards.
