Be thorough when writing a will
16 August 2010![]()
Anyone writing a will needs to make sure they are thorough when they put the document together, the Daily Telegraph has advised. For example, it may be advantageous for someone other than a beneficiary to help draft the will, as this will minimise the chances of it being challenged at a later stage.
Furthermore, the paper recommends that instructions should be "clear and unambiguous" and that any names used in the will should match those on birth certificates, "if Catherine is known as Katie, for example". Once the document has been written, it must then be reviewed on a regular basis and altered where necessary as this will help minimise disputes after death.
Wills also need to be signed and witnessed by two people who are not named as immediate beneficiaries, the paper stated. It is important that the will is stored in a safe place and that family members know where it is so it can be retrieved when necessary.
