Rogue will-writers causing problems for consumers
13 August 2010![]()
The extent of the rogue will-writing problem in the UK has been revealed in a new survey from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Illustrating the need for people to take on the expertise of a professional when getting their affairs in order, the study found that a third of people have encountered incompetence that has led to additional tax bills.
Furthermore, 75 per cent of STEP members said that they had come across dishonesty in the will-writing market over the course of the past year. Chief Executive David Harvey commented: "This research shows how widespread cowboy will writers have become and it is clear those who charge a fee for writing a will should now be regulated."
He added that selecting a will writer with the necessary qualifications and indemnity insurance is crucial if people are to be sure their affairs are being dealt with properly.
