In a change to the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Regulations, employees are now permitted to self-certify sickness for up to 28 days, until 26 January 2022. (These days include weekends and bank holidays.) Staff only need to see a doctor for a ‘sick note’ if they have been ill for more than 28 days and have taken sick leave.

Previously, it was required that businesses ask their employees to provide a doctor’s note, if they were off sick for more than seven days.

This temporary extension to the time in which employees are permitted to self-certify their sickness without a doctor's note, has come into force to support the vaccine roll out, as the NHS prioritises administering Covid vaccines and booster jabs.

The extension will apply to employees whose spell of incapacity for work began before 17 December 2021 – but is not longer than seven days – or become sick between the 17 December 2021 until the 26 January 2022.
