April sales boost for high street retailers
Retail sales improved by 2.3% month-on-month in April, as good weather boosted high street businesses.
Official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that sales were also 4% higher when compared to the same month of 2016.
The results came in higher than analysts' predictions of 1% monthly growth and 2% annual growth.
The ONS said good weather conditions appeared to contribute to the growth recorded in April. It noted that average price rises eased slightly during the month, dipping to 3.1% from March's 3.3%
Ben Brettell, senior economist at financial firm Hargreaves Lansdown, said the timing of the Easter holiday may have boosted the April figures compared to March.
He said: " April's figures were always expected to be better than March, because of the timing of the Easter holiday, but economists had forecast a smaller rebound of 1%, and much more subdued annual growth of 2%."
