Furlough scheme cut-off date extended to 19 March 2020

Employers can now claim for furloughed employees who were on their PAYE payroll on or before 19 March 2020.

HMRC has just published the fourth update to its guidance on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

Previously, employers could only claim for employees on their PAYE payroll on or before 28 February 2020. The change means that the large number of people who previously fell outside the scheme, such as those who recently changed jobs, have now been brought within it.

Jo Davis, employment partner at B P Collins, said, “This will be a great relief to a number employees who fell through the cracks of the scheme because they started their jobs too late. However, there will still be employees who were employed in early March who won’t be caught as their new employer pays its staff at the end of the month and so they had not made a RTI (real time information) submission before the new cut off date of 19 March 2020.  So a positive step in the right direction but unfortunately it won’t catch everyone who was employed before the introduction of the furlough scheme.”
