New Skilled Worker Immigration Route to Open on 1 December 2020

Yesterday, the Home Office laid the text of new Immigration Rules before Parliament and confirmed that the new Skilled Worker route – which is to replace the current Tier 2 (General) Visa – will be open for applications from 1 December 2020.

Certificates of Sponsorship assigned before 1 December 2020 will remain valid, but all applications made on or after 1 December 2020 will be decided under the new rules.

To be granted a Skilled Worker visa, the applicant must earn 70 points.  The first 50 points are earned by having an offer from a Home Office licensed sponsor at a sufficiently high skill level and by having a good knowledge of English. The remaining 20 points can be earned in a number of ways depending on the migrant’s occupation, salary and qualifications.

Once freedom of movement of EU citizens ends in January 2021, many EU citizens will need to be sponsored by their employers if they wish to live and work in the UK. This means that more people than ever will be subject to the new rules.
