Zero-hours employees ‘unaware of holiday rights’

A high proportion of workers on zero-hours contracts are unaware of their employment rights, a new report has warned.

According to Citizens Advice, half of people using these contracts wrongly believe they are unable to access paid holidays. And the same is true of two in five people on temporary contracts.

The organisation suggested that some employers may be unsure about whether these workers are eligible to receive a holiday entitlement. However, it believes that others are deliberately taking advantage of workers' confusion.

With the general election now just weeks away, Citizens Advice said the next government must encourage people to find out if they are eligible for paid leave.

Chief executive Gillian Guy said: "Thousands are missing out on rights they are entitled to due to a lack of awareness, confusion and in some cases deliberate dirty tactics by employers.

"With more than half of employers having staff working shifts or variable hours, action needs to be taken now to protect workers' rights."
