On 23 January 2020 the Government announced that a new right to parental bereavement leave will come into force from 6 April 2020.

The new right to leave will mean that an employee who loses a child under the age of 18 or suffers a stillbirth after 24 weeks of pregnancy will be entitled to two weeks’ statutory leave.  The two weeks’ leave can be taken either all at once or as two separate weeks. For those employees who meet minimum earning criteria and have at least 26 weeks’ service, the parental bereavement leave will be paid.

The leave will be paid at the lower of £151.20 per week or 90% of the employee’s weekly salary.
