The UK’s drone population is growing rapidly year on year, with there now being more than 130,000 drones owned in the country.
If you own a drone, it is key to understand how to operate it safely.
Drones are small aircraft without a human pilot on board, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVS. If you recently acquired a drone, it’s essential to understand how to use it properly. If you operate a drone or a model aircraft weighing between 250 grams and 20 kilograms, you’ll need to complete an online foundation test and register it with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), but failure to register can result in a fine of up to £1000.
It is also important to understand how to safely operate your drone – make sure you always have a clear line of sight to your drone and try to stay below 400 feet. It’s also a good idea to stay away from airfields and airports. Finally, follow the drone manufacturer’s instructions and remember that legal responsibility for the drone lies with the operator. Failure to fly responsibly may lead to an offence being committed.
