Our team often receives questions in relation to the height of garden fences. We seek to answer some of the most common questions with this video.
How high can a garden fence be?
- If your back garden fence runs along a highway used by vehicles or a highway footpath, the maximum height cannot exceed 1m from the ground.
- In all other circumstances, your back garden fence can be up to 2m from ground level.
- A front garden fence cannot exceed 1m.
Are there exceptions?
Unless you have an existing fence that exceeds 2m, you can only extend past the restrictions if you’ve received planning permission. You may be able to build a trellis on top of your fence, but check the height restrictions with your local council.
What happens if I extend without planning permission?
You may be issued with an enforcement notice. This can be issued up to 4 years after the fence was erected and will result in you having to take down your fence immediately.
