It was reported yesterday that train companies are extending a scheme offering free travel to those fleeing domestic abuse in the UK until the end of March 2021.
The “Rail to Refuge” scheme is a joint initiative involving rail operators and the charity Women’s Aid. The aim of this scheme is to provide free tickets for women, men and children travelling to refuge services. Sadly, charities dealing with domestic abuse have reported a significant increase in appeals for help since the start of the pandemic and particularly during lockdown. Following a lockdown there was a surge in those seeking refuge places and charities are now preparing for a repeat following lockdown 2.0.
In many domestic abuse situations, the perpetrator controls all aspects of the life of their victim, to include finances. Some victims are simply not in a position to flea the relationship and seek refuge as they simply do not have the resources available to them to do so. The Rail to Refuge scheme enables the refuge to book the train ticket directly, once a space in the refuge has been confirmed.
